Best of Show: Bonne Terre Mine

Missouri and its many attractions and destinations are often celebrated by publications across the nation. This month, our ‘Best of Show’ series features just a handful of these accolades from the past year. If you haven’t already, you’ll definitely want to add these destinations to your travel calendar in 2016.

Bonne Terre Mine is one of Missouri’s hidden wonders. This mine is home to the world’s largest subterranean lake and is open for cave tours, boat rides and diving excursions. It was also recently named one of the coolest things to do in the states by Yahoo! Travel.

Yahoo! Travel’s “A State-by-State Guide to the 50 Coolest Things in America” calls Bonne Terre’s boating excursions the “coolest boat ride in the country.” The article also focuses on the mine’s 17 miles of underground navigable shoreline and fantastic scuba diving opportunities.

At one billion gallons, Bonne Terre features the world’s largest fresh water scuba diving venue (reservations required). Illuminated from above, divers are afforded more than 100 feet of visibility. If diving isn’t for you, one-hour guided walking tours are available along the old mule trails, or you can take a boat tour along the lake, where the crystal clear water and lighting offers beautiful views of abandon shafts and equipment.

Extend your visit in Bonne Terre with a stay at the 1909 Railway Depot bed & breakfast, a National Historic Site. If you’re interested in learning more about the sky and beyond after traveling underground, the Space Museum has more than 600 artifacts on display and tells the story of humankind’s space adventures through interactive exhibits.
