Best of Show: Events “Explode” on PictureMO

Another three months has flown by, which means it is time to announce another round of winners in the Missouri Division of Tourism’s (MDT) PictureMO photo contest.

Through PictureMO, MDT asks talented photographers to step behind the lens and showcase Missouri. Each quarter, contestants submit photos that fit a different theme and MDT honors the top three each quarter (only two this quarter). Winning photos may appear in the 2016 Official Missouri Travel Guide and may be used on Facebook and other Missouri Division of Tourism marketing efforts.

This quarter, photographers were asked to focus on “Missouri festivals and events” as a theme. With that, let us present the PictureMO 2014, third quarter winning photos:

1st place: “Wilson’s Creek Battlefield” – Missy Mueller of Rogersville, Mo. Photo taken at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield.

“The photo was taken at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield on the 153rd anniversary of the battle.

My favorite thing about each photo is being able to see the incredible power & force a cannon actually has. Seeing that really added some perspective as we toured the entire area and learned the story and details of the battle, while walking the actual trails and terrain the soldiers did. It really was an incredible learning experience.” – Missy Mueller

2nd place: “Voices from the Past” – Patrick P. Evenson of Emporia, Ks. Photo was taken in St. Joseph, Mo.

“What I like about the photo is the only light sources exposing the photo are those of torches and handheld flashlights, requiring a steady hand.

The event as a whole was an impressive ghost tour, done annually in St. Joseph’s historic Mount Mora Cemetery. “Tour” is very misleading, because although visitors to the event tour the cemetery by Mount Mora’s ‘tenants,’ it’s more of a theatrical play from volunteers who are very passionate about the rich history of the city and the character they are reenacting. As the photographer, I had to keep reminding myself to take pictures and not become engrossed into the story telling.” – Patrick P. Evenson

Congratulations to the winners. Remember: if you get a great shot of one of the Missouri’s wonders, submit it to MDT’s Picture Mo Flickr page; find the rules for the contest at the Photo Group Rules Page.
