Fall Fun at The Farmer’s House

It’s time to get excited about fall with a trip to The Farmer’s House.

September in Platte County equates to back-to-school, football games and more importantly – the countdown to fall! Picking the perfect pumpkin; maneuvering through a corn maze; finding the perfect apple; or, enjoying the fall colors are just a few fall highlights in Platte County. A new fall favorite – a visit to The Farmer’s House!

The Farmer’s House, previously known as Vaughn’s Orchard, is located off 273 Hwy between Platte City and Weston (directly across the highway from Weston Red Barn Farm).  All the buildings utilized to process apples grown at Vaughn’s are still there – the Country Store, the barn, and most importantly – the Food Shack! Check their website for special events. Just a hint – the second Saturday of each month are fried chicken days! The famous apple fritters are on the menu as well.

During a visit last month, my daughter and I bought fresh ears of corn out of a pick-up truck before enjoying a pulled pork barbecue sandwich during their annual Corn Fest!

More than just a location to buy corn, a bag of apples or a great pie for dessert, The Farmer’s House sells locally grown and produced “farm to table” products including honey, cheese and farm and home related items. The Country Store is stocked top to bottom with gourmet and down-home items that will make any foodie smile! When you stop by you will also get to meet the farmers and bakers at Farmer’s House. They will amaze you and truly welcome you to their farm.

farmers house 2The Farmer’s House employees are youth and young adults who have a form of developmental disability. These employees are what make The Farmer’s House such a great place to visit as they take ownership and pride in what they grow and sell. I’ve even been told that if you need a recipe for that bag of apples you are about to buy – just ask! Everything that is grown at the Farmer’s House has a favorite recipe just waiting to be shared.

Come in to the Country Store and you can buy frozen apple dumplings to take home plus get a heartfelt “Thank You”!

Yes – the perfect time of the year is rapidly approaching in Platte County – come visit and meet the farmers and The Farmer’s House.
