In a small, sparkling shop, Cherry Mash, Zotz and other candy fill every nook and cranny. A drawer filled with candy cigarettes sits below a shelf lined with Fruit Stripe gum and Cow Tales. Pez dispensers shaped like classic TV cartoon characters peer from a top shelf. This isn’t a candy shop from decades ago, though – it’s Columbia, Missouri’s newest sweets stop, May Contain Nuts, which opened in December 2015.
Nostalgia isn’t the only thing May Contain Nuts specializes in. The shop’s glass cases display a selection of fudge flavors – Butterfinger, amaretto-chocolate swirl, crème brûlée, candy cane, peanut butter – made with real butter and cream at Capital Candy in Jefferson City, Missouri. The bulk candy that lines the warm wood shelving sells by the half-pound at price points ranging from $4 to $7, and customers can mix and match along the same price points. May Contain Nuts occupies space once used by Velvet Cupcake Café, inside The Tiger Hotel in downtown Columbia.
