The 2014 second quarter PictureMO contest has come to an end and we are excited so many camera savvy people got out around Missouri and enjoyed the arts. The theme for the quarter included public art, historic sites, live entertainment and museums across the state.
What is PictureMO, you ask? The PictureMO Flickr group began in early 2013 as a way to show off the photography geniuses of Missouri and to build the Missouri Division of Tourism’s photo gallery. First through third place winners are announced quarterly. Winning photos may be published in the Official Missouri Travel Guide and may appear on other MDT marketing materials.
This quarter’s winners also did a great job playing with shadows and night exposures. Take a look at the other great shots captured around the state by fellow Missourians by visiting the PictureMO photostream.
Without further ado, here are the 2014 Quarter Two PictureMO winners:
Hometown Art by Thomas Johnson
This photo was taken by Thomas in his hometown of Dixon, Missouri. The mural is located in downtown Dixon, across from the City Hall. It was painted on the side of a building by students from the Dixon High School Art Club. Thomas has been mastering his photography skills since high school, when he first fell in love with the art.
I like capturing photos of Missouri because there is always lots of things to take pictures of that a lot of people don’t realize are in Missouri.”
West by Missy Mueller
Missy is a Colorado-transplant living in Rogersville, Missouri. Her love for photography and new-found love for the “Show-Me” State helped her and her family through some tough times. Missy’s photo was taken in downtown St. Louis on the Gateway Arch grounds.
I chose the Arch for the symbolism and the scene that played out while I was there shooting. The people in the silhouette were part of a group of tourists from India who were seeing the ’Gateway to the West’ for the very first time. I watched them as they got out of a big van, the looks of amazement on their faces. When they got to the top of the steps, the young men let out a ’victory‘call and raised their hands in the air in celebration. Then they all just stopped and stood there, taking it all in. It was an amazing thing to watch and capture.”
Liberty Memorial by Brian Devero
Brian, a U.S. veteran and Grandview native, is proud Kansas City is home to the only World War I museum in the country; it is located at the Liberty Memorial you see in his stunning photo. You can see many other photos from the event on Brian’s Flickr page.
We were at the Celebration at the Station event for Memorial Day weekend and I decided to take this photo of Union Station at dusk before the sky was dark and the fireworks began, in addition to several others during the event.
Luckily, the weather has been quite amazing this 2014 spring and early summer. Let’s hope it stays that way for quarter three and all of the festivals that will be happening throughout the state. We would like PictureMO’ers to focus on these special public events and festivals for the months of July, August and September. Winners of quarter three will be announced in early October! Visit PictureMO to join and make sure to read the official rules and regulations before you enter your photos.
