Show-Me Five: Missouri Pie Shops

Let’s all be honest: as the cold weather settles in, you want comfort food and the holidays give you the perfect excuse to suspend the diet. November in the Show-Me State: it’s the perfect recipe for pie!

Incredible bakeries abound in Missouri so narrowing down a selection can be tough. Every one of our Show-Me Five gets rave reviews on Facebook, Yelp and TripAdvisor. Most also offer cakes, cookies, other treats and lunch options (from quiche or pot pies to sandwiches) – but today, we’re focused like a laser on the pièce de rèsistance of holiday dinners: pie.

Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery – Kimmswick – Is the home of the famous Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie. Now, you may think that’s really all you need to know, but the Blue Owl isn’t done with that one amazing creation. With dozens of pies, a handful of cheesecakes, several layer cakes and a selection of other pastries – including pie pops! – Blue Owl is worth a drive from absolutely anywhere.

A Slice of Pie, Rolla – All their pies are handmade and they’re BIG: some of the crème and meringue pies weigh about five to nearly six pounds! In addition to the regular mouth-watering treats, check out their pie of the month (always something out of the ordinary) and a sampler platter that’s perfect for parties, meetings and gifts. They are already taking orders for the holidays.

Peggy Jean’s Pies, Columbia – High-end gourmet pies made with only fresh ingredients and baked from scratch daily. Fruit, cream, nut – and even savory – pies are on the menu. Choose from tarts (3-inch pies), baby pies (5 inches) and full size (9-inch and 12-inch) pies. If you want one or more for one of the upcoming holidays, pre-order is required. Their jelly jar pies make a great gift.

Spring Creek Tea Room, Ozark – If you like selection when it comes to indulgence, Spring Creek offers dozens of cakes and pies daily … but they go fast, so come early. They’ve combined an eatery and an antique store and are open for lunch (be sure to try the chicken salad). The Coconut Crème Pie is to die for. This is one place you’ll have to try for yourself; they do not take carryout orders for full pies.

Ashleigh’s Bake Shop, Kansas City – This small, exquisite find uses a secret recipe for flaky all-butter pie crust and bakes all their delicious treats fresh daily. Sample by the slice, choose a mini pie or order a ready-to-share (only if you want!) full-sized pie. Call ahead to select from the daily selection or allow 48 hours advance notice for pre-orders.
