Summer Road Trips: Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau: Where Fun and Learning Go Hand in Hand

Perched on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi, Cape Girardeau is a small city packed with big learning opportunities for you and your kiddos this summer!

Start your weekend at the Cape Riverfront Market, where weekly demonstrations and the monthly Marketeer’s Club illustrate how food is grown, teach about good nutrition and provide hands-on educational fun.  Live music, tables under shade trees and breakfast make this a healthy and relaxing way to start your Saturday.  The Cape Riverfront Market kicks off on Saturday, May 7, and takes place every Saturday through the end of October from 8 a.m. to noon in downtown Cape Girardeau.

Head a couple blocks up Broadway to the Discovery Playhouse, a children’s museum with exhibits for all ages.  Splash and play in the Water Garden, “shop” for groceries, care for babies in the nursery, practice good financial skills at the bank complete with a drive-through and let your littlest ones crawl and explore in the Pollywog Pond area.  The second floor is under construction with thousands of square feet of brand new exhibits headed your way soon!

Spend an afternoon at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center where you can experience nature inside and out.  This high quality (and free!) spot is packed with hands-on exhibits for all ages, including a trace-the-animal-print station, an indoor beehive, bird watching areas with binoculars and aquariums full of wildlife native to the area … and that’s just inside!  Outside the nature center, you can set off on White Oak Trace, a trail system that surrounds the nature center and offers ADA accessible portions of trail.  Check out a free hiking backpack – there are many themes to choose from – and enjoy your walk with the included activities and information.  Check out a kid’s fishing pole and bait so your kiddos can toss in a line in the fishing pond reserved for little ones.

A library might not be on your must-see radar when you’re traveling, but the Cape Public Library is truly a destination.  The children’s department has cozy spots to curl up with a good book; the easily accessible displays allow your little ones to browse on their own.  A puppet theatre and educational toys are on hand in this sunny space, and the teen’s room just next door gives your older kids their own space to enjoy.  Their programming is exceptional so check their calendar before you visit!
