Visit the World in Missouri

Do you dream of traveling the world but thoughts of lost luggage and expensive air fares keep you at home? The Show-Me State has an abundance of city and town names “borrowed” from other places like Rome, Milan and Athens. You can even visit Oregon, Louisiana and Nevada without crossing the state line. So if you’re looking for a cheap adventure, grab a map and plan your trip around the world in Missouri!

Say adios to long plane rides and visit Mexico, home to the Miss Missouri Pageant. Enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine at Casa Del Sol before catching a show at Presser Performing Arts Center.

Union Covered Bridge

Faire un voyage (take a trip) to Paris and see the Union Covered Bridge, one of the four remaining covered bridges in Missouri. It may not be as tall as the Eiffel Tower but, built in 1871, it is older by 18 years.

Ride your bike on the Katy Trail in Rhineland (no, not the region in Europe) and stop in for a burger at the Trailside Bar and Grill.  Pay homage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows at beautiful St. Martin’s Church.

Jacob’s Cave in Versailles (pronounced ver-SAILS here in Missouri) holds the largest swap meet in the Midwest three times a year in April, June and October, where you can find anything from chickens to hand-made quilts. Explore Mennonite Country for fresh produce, baked goods and exotic spices.

After visiting Paris, you can hop over to the beach in Florida…well sort of. Birthplace of famous literary icon Mark Twain and home to Mark Twain State Park, you can swim, boat and fish in the waters of Mark Twain Lake.

Just west of Missouri’s capital, California may not always be sunny, but it is home to Burgers’ Smokehouse and arguably some of the best smoked meats in Missouri.

Cruise down Route 66 to Cuba, the “Mural City.” Visit the historic Wagon Wheel Motel and stop in at Missouri Hick Barbeque for a savory pile of pulled pork.

Pack your bags and get ready to go, because all these destinations and many others are only a quick drive from wherever you are in Missouri. A visit to Cairo, Lisbon and Amsterdam can be yours by simply driving the state’s winding roads.
